Selling services is not the same as selling a hard, tangible product. With a product people will analyze whether the visible benefits of the product will solve the problem they have, help them avoid pain or help them move towards pleasure in some way. Services aren’t as easy.
Can you sell yourself?
When you are selling a service like web design services, seo marketing, social media marketing, graphic design, etc… people must buy into you the sales person / web designer. You have to help your potential client to see the tangible benefits of hiring you over any other firm. Let’s look at 3 ways to do this.
Make sure your website reflects your best work. – I’ve personally seen too many web designers who have decent work in their portfolio that looks better than their own website. Make sure you take time to update your website regularly. Maybe it’s time for a refresh of your design. At the very least, regularly check your website to make sure it represents your current web design skills and not from two or three years ago.
Choose your portfolio carefully. – When you are just starting out you need to just throw mud against the wall. Put up all of the work you’ve done. As you build your repertoire however, you’ll want to choose items for your online portfolio that represents your range as a designer. Don’t overwhelm people with quantity as much as quality.
Push yourself to be creative – This speaks to point number 2 above. You need to purposely push yourself as a designer to create different flavors of websites. All of your work shouldn’t look the same. If it does your portfolio is going to be weak. It will communicate to the potential client that you are one dimensional. You’ll lose work to other more creative individuals and firms. Don’t be afraid to experiment.
At the end of the day, there are probably at least a hundred different things you could do to get more clients. The three mentioned here though will be ignored to your peril.
